2 Artificial Intelligence

Using information from the articles on pages 57-60 in our text, discuss the differences between human thinking and artificial intelligence using facts from the articles and your personal opinion. You may even give examples from entertainment media such as the films "AI," and "I Robot" or others.  75-100 words.

After reading the text "Think" which states that whithout the exsistance of mankind artifical intelligence would not even exsist.
    Humans have made it possible to venture into the solar system. (ie: trips to the moon and finding possible life {the organism they found}
on another planet). Some philosopher's think that computers and Al already exceed human intelligence, while others say that human kind can be replaced by technology, and some disagree and say humans created these things and we are a form of carbon-based organic matter where computers are created by silicon-based matter. hmmm..sounded weird to me too! However the same Lady also states that We are spirtual, and we believe in an after life now there is cyber space where this is considered as a third after life. This was all a bit interesting to me however I would have to agree with the lady that duisagrees with all of this mess. I think yes everyone is using some for of communication with the outside world via social networks. Its all a little funny too me.Because as a child growing up we never had internet in school we were lucky if we had a computer at that time they had the big floppy disks. lol and now our children have computers right in their class rooms with access to the internet.

  2. In the articles in the text "Think", the authors discover the emerging ideas that there will be beings that will someday inhabit the earth that have artificial intelligence. A big portion of the debate is whether or not the AI beings would even have a chance of being created with out humans. The answer, in my opinion, is no. Who would design the soft ware to create the "emotion" or similation of emotion in these robots? Humans would have to. We have free will and the ability to feel and discern right from wrong. I do not believe that the AI beings will ever be able to think using emotions or judge a moral situation as a human would. Kurweil speaks about how intricate the programming of emotion will be. He says that we are likely to believe that the AI actually has feelings. If you read further into the text, you will see how he discusses the very precise programming of feelings related to situations. I think he means if you hurt yourself, you cry, so this is the emotion that would be programmed into the AI. In my opinion, creating AI to do our "dirty" work or dangerous jobs, makes sense. However, to have them living side by side with us could be dangerous.

  3. In the book it talks about depending on the point of views that computers have or will surpass human intelligences. Other points of views say that computers will never surpass humans because computers do not and will not be able to have free will and a spiritual dimension which is the core of humanity. Those treats we poses are owed to our being composed of carbine, evolution, and the human experiences we as a race have gone through scene the being of time. I feel that it is vital to humanity to smarter and fast computers but I think there needs to be limitations on them. We already have a problem with being dependent in technology and if we make computers to be like us then in a way we might lose our humanity somewhat and become complacent and overly dependent. Just like in many movies where we make computers so smart to run our lives but they end up taking over and try to become the masters, this could very well be something that could happen in the later future. I feel that smarter computers can benefit mankind but we need to use it as a tool and not as a replacement.

It is highly unlikely that computers will ever thank like people do. That is the people that can think anyways. I question some people's ablity to think.

Some people believe in a all-powerful god, even thou there is no proof that god does exist. It is a leap of faeth. No machine will ever beable to do that. It is true that computers can do math calculations fast than peopel can with out making any mistakes in their calculations. That is not the same as thinking. They are only doing what they have been programmed to do.

In the article it talks about computers surpassing human intelligence. I disagree with this for it is the humans that program the computers to do what we want or need. Also computer do not have feelings or emotions to help them make better dicisions. Yes they may be able to do certain thing fasted and more efficient than humans can but that is because someone has programmed them to be able to perform those functions. The computer is only as smart as the person operating it, we are the ones telling the computer what to do next. If we do not have the right program or the knowledge to use the program the computer won't be able to do what we ask it to. So yes a computer thinks but only what we tell it to. Therefore in my personal opinion computers could not function with out a human telling them to.

According to the book, artificial intelligence is incapable of experiencing free will and spirituality like humans can. Intelligent computers are already evolving at a much faster rate than organic evolution and are able to program themselves without the need of humans. Human beings always have a self-transcending mind and finite creaturely being. As a result, artificial intelligence will no longer have a need for the existence of women or the natural environment we humans live in. Some people believe artificial intelligence is incapable of replacing humans in the evolutionary ladder, while others believe the exact opposite. I believe that anything is possible so who knows, maybe years and years from now artificial intelligence will one day surpass human beings and no longer feel a need for our existence and turn on us and take over. You never know!

I agree with the fact that computers, technology and AI have definitely helped the human race advance industrially, medically, etc. BUT I do not think that it is wise that sometimes people rely heavily on the idea that AI should be a "way of life" so to speak. I think that although we are compelled by our willpower to accomplish just about anything, I dont think we would be capable of fully protecting ourselves from something(s) that could be potentially very dangerous. I do believe that as much as we can, we should always look into further possibilities for advancements in all the different technologies, but I also believe we should keep our curiosity close at bay. I suppose Im a bit of a nonconformist in a sense because I feel like, "Everything we've done has worked up to this point, whats wrong with keeping things the way they are.?"

Humans are the reason that computers exisit. God is the reason humans exisit. I am a firm believer that there is a God who created us. John im not saying you are wrong, But you say there is no proof that there is a God, did you believe that Bin Laden was dead when the media broadcast that he was dead? There was no proof and honestly there is no proof still. Back to the topic, computers are programmed by humans and the information that caomputers have came from the people who enter the data. It is faster because it's already programmed. The human brain take longer to process information because it has to recall the data stored in it. AI needs humans in order to be successful. Humans are needed and i dont think we will ever be extinct.

The topic of artificial intelligence has been around for a very long time. There are many diffrant opinions of this particular subject. I guess it depends on the way that you look at it. I do believe that it is a great concept and it will only furthur what we as humans can accomplish. I do not think that AI will ever be able to replace mankind. I remeber back a few years ago when I was waitressing the buzz was that alot of us would eventually lose our jobs to "robot" waiters, nainly because they do not have the need to be paid. People said that they would eventually pay for themselves. And as you can see today this concept is few and far between. Yes AI is needed to make life easier but it will never be able to exceed human intel, after all people have to design and build these machines.

I think the topic of artificail intellegance is a big thought of the future ahead. I do beleive that one day computers will more then likely take over human beings. i do not beleive that it will happen any time in my life time though. Evolution and Artificial intellegance will one day play a huge role in society. Evolution its self has already done so. I remember working at Chase pitkins before they closed talking with all the older employees joking about how one day robots and computers would be running are whole warehouse. It's a very interesting article I took alot out of it.

  12. The first article in the text "AI & Evolution" by Ray Kurzweil describes intelligence creating new intelligence, which brings up the question "can intelligence create intelligence more intelligent then itself?". This is a question that in recent years has become a consideration for those who find themselves involved in this topic. This particular article brings up the idea that in the future the human race will be able to implant in our brains what they call "neural implants", and suggest that these implants will give them the ability to produce not only virtual sensory exeriences but also the feelings they want to associate with these experiences. This idea suggests that AI will become involved with evoloution, the combination of the human race & AI. I have a few mixed feelings about this idea, on one hand I think it would be nice to be able to control your feelings, it would put an end to mental health issues that many humans suffer from, issues that someone somewhere thinks a bunch of chemicals will fix, which is something I truly disagree about. However on the other hand I believe that we were not ment to have that control for a reason, goes back to "who are we to play god". Who is to say that trying to make things easier for yourself now wont turn out to make things more difficult later, or that you might miss out on important details in life.

The second article in the text "In our image: AI & the Human Spirt" by Noreen Herzfeld goes a bit further than Kurzweil describing the image we are able to give ourselves with the use of technology. On one hand this can become a postive tool for an individual, having the ability to express yourself or give yourself your desired image will give you the oppurtunity to learn new things that you may not have known about yourself. This part of the article I believe is very true, however the article does go on to describe that with AI we as a human race will be able to reach a point of immortality within the cyber world. Personally I feel as if this is a far..far reach, but even if you were able to reach a point of immoratlity would you want to live forever?

  13. Ray Kurzweil believes that AI may be the next step in evolution; today's computers and AI already exceed human intelligence and are in many ways evolving at a much faster rate than organic evolution. On the other hand, Noreen Herzfeld, argues that AI will never be able to surpass human intelligence because it lacks free will and a spiritual dimension.

"Intelligence and free will are nonphysical properties of living things (pg. 57)." I totally agree with this statement, therefore I would have to say I agree with Noreen. I feel that computers and AI may be able to be smarter than a human brain, but they can never surpass a human being because they lack personality and personal opinion.

I find the whole topic of artificial intelligence to be like a science fiction movie. I do not like or understand many of them! I believe that computers do have an important role in our current world as well as the future. While they are able to take over jobs and other things formerly done by humans I don't believe the day will ever come when they become smarter that the scientists who developed them or take over the world.

As far as a computer being programed to feel emotion or spirituality, I don't agree with that either. Reproducing either of them would be like a cheap designer replicating the latest expensive fashion trend - you could look at it and see it was a fake. Would you want a robot as a friend? Not me - no matter how well programmed it was, it simply would not understand my feelings and emotions. It might tell me what it is programmed to tell me things or offer opinions but it would not be able to determine if that is the true right answer to my problem. And then, there is also the problem of words double meanings - what if the computer chose the wrong meaning? I am thinking of the Tim McGraw song titled "Back When" The song talks about the new meanings for old words "A coke was just a coke and crack's what you were doing when you were cracking jokes..." Would a computer be able to determine which way the word was being used? It could put a person in a very awkward situation!
God made us to be one of a kind - no one else exactly like us. I think that's the way it should be. I really don't want a duplicate of me walking around. We are who we are and that makes us unique! There is no way that a person's spirituality can be reproduced. The feeling of peace that comes over me when I leave church on Sunday morning can not be reproduced scientifically or otherwise. It's a special personal relationship that I have with God.I may be selfish but I want to keep it that way!

I have the same beliefs that Noreen Herzfeld has when she says "AI will never be able to surpass human intelligence because AI lacks free will and spirtual dimension". I completely agree. Yes computers and other AI can do remarkable things in a fraction of the time that it would take even the smartest human being they are only able to do this because of how human program them to do. I don't think it will ever come a day where a circumstance, that of the movie EAGLE EYE with Shia Lebouf, where a computer goes completely hay wire and works on it's own and uses humans to do unspeakable things, while pretending it is a human being. All kinds of AI get clitches from time to time but they lack the the spiritual emotion to feel and express themselves as humans. AI has come a long way and can do remarkable things and has completely enhanced our way of life but only humans have the ablility to surpass AI by having emotion and showing compassion.

Artificial Intelligence is a step towards the future of technology. It is attempt at letting computers do thinking to make it easier for humans. The fact that a computer does not feel emotion may keep AI from moving past the human thought process. Computers cannot always be counted on, systems fail and human intelligence will always be there to pick up the pieces. I'm sure someday they will be able to make computers feel emotion and interpret feelings and when that happens I do believe that artificial intelligence will move past human intelligence.
