The story Silver Blaze demonstrates Critical Thinking in action. You know the story and the world’s famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. This tale is an exercise in deductive reasoning. Write about the clues that Holmes pulled together to solve the mystery of Silver Blaze. What was the final solution of the events? What almost happened to Silver Blaze? Who killed the trainer—how and why? What particular clues did Holmes explain to the others?
Sherlock Holmes track down Silver Blaze, while also solving the mystery surrounding the murder of the prized winning thoroughbred’s trainer. The trainer did not want Silver Blaze to be able to race in the upcoming race, and was attempting to hide the horse at another location to prevent him from racing. Sherlock Holmes, while investigating both the disappearance of Silver Blaze, stumbled onto the deceased trainer was believed to have died due to a severe blow to his head. After thorough evaluation of the of the hoof prints in the mud, along with the gash on the trainers head, it was then determined that Silver Blaze was actually responsible for its trainers death. Silver Blaze made it safely to a neighbors stable, where then the prominent white star on the horses head had been covered with something that made it difficult to recognize thoroughbred. In the end, even Silver Blaze’s owner was amazed with the investigation performed by Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes solved this mystery using dedutive reasoning.

Sherlock Holmes used a couple of different clues to solve the mystery. The first clue was the dog that guarded the stables. He only seemed to when strangers approached the stable. He also used the receipt of the expensive dress store, the knife that was found on the trainer (mr. stryker), the candle wax found at the crime scene and he proceeded to follow the trail in which he assumed the horse would go. After locating his hoof print he understood that the horse ran in the direction of the other wealthy horse owner. The solution of the events were that Stryker was paid a lot of money to prevent the horse from winning in the next race, as a result he entended to injure the horses tendo in his leg with the tiny knife found in his possession but while trying to injure Silver Blaze he instinctivley reacted and kicked Stryker in the head and killed him. The horse then ran in the direction of the other wealthy horse owners stable where they preceeded to paint him black so he could not be recognized. Sherlock Holmes was able to have the other stable owner return the horse if in turn he would not look to prosecute him for any wrong doing. The horse was returned to Silver Blazes owner at the upcoming race and wiped clean of the paint to expose his silver color.

The movie "Silver Blaze" by Sir Author Conan Doyel was interesting. Silver Bell was a picked favorite. Some of the things Holmes picked up on was the cataract knife from london. ONce he realaized that Mapelton was a riveraly he paid them a visit with Watson and realized that silver bell was being keept there with something black over his white star; which made him unreconizable. They realized they trainer was killed on accident by the horse because he was a sell out and very untrustworthy. Hunter the stable boy was knocked out with opium and the maid was bribed. It still did not work and the truth still came out. Siver bells won the race and the owner got his good reputation back. The guy in custody muxt have been let go once they realized the truth about what really happend, that the horse was the killer. I enjoyed the movie.

Silver Blaze was a movie that described deductive reasoning. When the horse cam up missing and they stubbled upon the old man. The clues they used to solve the mystery where all skills of deductive reasoning. The candle wax, shank, as well as the reciept were all analyized using deductive reasoning. The old man was killed trying to injure the horse. The horse in turn tried to defend himself and kicked the old man dead. I think the movie was alright.

ReplyDeleteThe story Silver Blaze staring the world’s famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, used deductive reasoning to solve the mystery of who killed the trainer and what happen to Silver Blaze. Sherlock Holmes gathered many clues: (1) the dog didn’t bark as usual when strangers entered the barn, therefore it had to be someone the dog know, (2) the receipts for expensive dresses that the trainers wife never owned, (3) the knife found on the trainer, (4) the candle wax were the body was found, (4) the sheep’s behavior, (5) the hoof prints, (6) the marks left on the trainer’s body. With all the clues Sherlock Holmes was able to come up with the conclusion that the trainer took Silver Blaze from the barn, this is why the dog didn’t bark, and intended to cut the tendon in the horse’s legs so Silver Blaze wouldn’t win the race. This is why the trainer had a knife on him and there was the candle wax near the body. Studying the hoof marks and marks left on the trainer he was able to conclude the horse had killed the trainer in self-defense and following the hoof marks on the ground that the horse was being hidden in the neighbor’s barns. The sheep had been acting differently because the trainer had been practicing on them. And you couldn’t tell it was Silver Blaze because they had covered the markings on her head with something black to try to disguise her. Once again another mystery solved by Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes discovered that when you eliminate the impossible, you discover what remains, which is the truth, no matter how improbbable. He used deductive reasoning to discover that the trainer was trying to harm the horse and through natural born instincts the horse defended itself, causing the Strakers death. We could all benefit from using this skill in our everyday lives, if we just took the time to sit back and examine the evidence.

ReplyDeleteSherlock Holmes used deductive logic in solving the mystery, Silver Blaze. By asking certain questions, he was able to conclude what happened to the trainer. When he found out that the guard dogs didn't bark, he deduced that the murder was not committed by a stranger. He used deductive logic to determine that Silver Blade was, in fact, back in the stable. Finding that Silver Blade was in the stable with black paint covering his nose showed Holmes that the real crime was that someone was trying to kidnap or injure the horse. The murder was not a murder at all but an accidental death caused by the trainer himself. When he lit the lantern while standing behind the horse, causing the horse to panic and the horse kicked the trainer in the forehead causing his death. The trainer's plans were to take the horse out of the stable, injure him and cut the tendons on his legs causing him to limp and Silver Blade would be unable to win his next race.

The movie “Silver Blaze” showed deductive reasoning. Holmes investigates everyone attached to the horse or the trainer. By looking at the case from every angle he is able to discover that Silver Blaze is still alive and being hidden in the Mapleton Stables. He tries to think like the horse where he would go if he was free. He eliminates suspects for the killer of the trainer because the dog would’ve barked and someone would’ve heard but when the dog didn’t bark that meant that the dog knew the murder. Picking up the simple clues is what made him solve the case and find Silver Blaze.
This movie and all the Sherlock Holmes stories are great examples of deductive reasoning and he is the king of it. In the movie he was able to use the fact that the dog didn’t bark, the knife, the hoof print on the body and the receipt for the dress never worn. With all this he was able to deduct that the trainer was trying to hurt the horse so that it won’t win and trying to do so the horse fought back and killed the trainer. It was a good movie and Like I said a great example of deductive reasoning.
ReplyDeleteIn the mystery of ’Silver Blaze and the murder of Stryker’ Sherlock Holmes puts together many different clues in order to bring Silver Blaze home and solve the murder of his trainer Stryker. The different clues he used to solve the mystery included, the guard dog who no one heard bark, the knife that was found on Stryker along with the candle wax found next to him, the strange behavior of the sheep in the heard, the hoof prints that were left by Silver Blaze and the injuries that were found the body of Stryker after he was discovered murdered. He figured that the trainer was the one who took Silver Blaze from the barn because the dog never barked when the horse was taken. After he discovered that the tendons of the sheep were cut he was lead to believe that it was done on purpose, and was exactly what Stryker was attempting to do to Silver Blaze because of the knife and candle wax that was found by him. Stryker was also found with injuries that looked like he had been kicked by the horse, Holmes believing it was done in self defense by the horse, however leading to the death of the trainer. Then he followed the hoof prints that lead from the body of Stryker to a neighbors’ barn which is where Holmes found Silver Blaze.
