9. Bringing Virtue Into the Workplace

We have discussed the importance of practicing virtue(generosity, compassion, honesty and others) to maintain a good life for ourselves and those we come into contact with. Discuss a particular virtue that you feel will be important in your future career and describe how it is important, how you will practice it, and how it will affect your work environment.

  1. I would have to say the three virtues listed all play a role in my future career field. I think it is important to treat others the way you wish to be treated. I will practice the three while interacting with my clients with professional and ethical norms.I think if everyone put these virtues to use in some way maybe our work force would not be so anal. I think often times people forget where they came from when they get a good job; norms, virtues and equality seem to jump out the window.lol

I feel honesty is one of the most important virtues in my future career. I have worked in too many places where promises were made by management and they never followed through with them. This just lead to lower moral from the employees. I feel if you teel someone something is going to happen then you as the boss need to make sure indeed it does. If not yo are pron to losing good employees or lowering productivity in your company. this is also true for your customer, if you tell them you are going to look into something for them, then make sure you do and get back to them in a timely manner. They should not have to keep call you, because after a few calls they will go else where to get their questions answered.

I think that it is important to treat every body like a person. Even if they are disabled. I know that some people look down on the disabled. That is wrong. I think that we should reurn phone calls as soon as possible. It is also very important not to miss lead your clients. Not to let them think that they are garinteed to win their case. The law does not work that way.

Generosity, Compassion, Honesty and others maintain a good life for ourselves and those we come into contact with. These will be important in my future career and important on how I will practice it, and how it will affect my work environment because they are all important in business. Nomater what job I chose to take. I want compaion for what I'm doing and for clients. I will want honesty so I can prove to future employers that i am good person to have working for them. Generosity to others so I can be treated the way I expect to be treated. It is these vitrues that i believe everyone looks for in people in general.

I think Honesty is a virtue that you need in your everyday life. It comes to play greatly in the world of IT. Many places that you could be employed at give you access to many things that are considered to be confidential. If the sensitive information got into the wrong hand it could be very bad for the company and cost them billions of dollars. Many companys in this field do even do credit checks to see how vulnorable you are to sell out information to competing companies. If you were to do this, and comprimise your integrity, you could serve jail time, and noone in your future would hire you.

I will practice compassion as a Medical Assistant. I believe when working with the sick or not even sick but with people in general who seek medical care for one reason or another, you want someone who is compasionate and empathasize with what you are going through. Expressing to a patient that I have compassion for their needs and I am there willing to help in anyway I can give them a sense of security and puts their mind at ease. Wether it's an extra pillow for a patient or a sympathetic hug or a kiss on a child's bandage boo-boo, compassion can speak volumes without saying anything at all.

I will practice compassion in my field as a medical assistant. working in the medical field i will have to deal with people who come from all walks of life. when dealing with people they look for people to have compassion for them wheter they are sick or well. Sometimes in order for people to e healed in areas they just need someone to be compassionate towards them.

In my future career as a paralegal I think the biggest and most important virtue is honesty. If you are not honest with your coworkers, or clients you may not have a job for very long. There is a code of ethics that a paralegal must live by such as client confidentiality, and not engaging in unauthorized practice of law by giving legal advice. There is no reason to not be honest in this field of work.

  10. Susan S,
I thnk that many of the virtues we have learned about work together. If you show compassion then you are being generous. If you are not being honest, it will show through and those around you will see it. I believe that trustworthiness is very important as well. Your co-workers must be able to trust you with confidential information and believe that you will keep it confidential. The Golden Rule of treating others as you wish to be treated should be an oath that all businesses and employees take. By attempting to follow this rule, many places of business would become much more enjoyable places to work and in turn, the moral and productivity of the staff will increase.

  11. When it comes to the work place I have always tried to instill the virtue is fairness to all and compassion when needed. Being fair in the work place is key to keep everyone working together well. If you as a supervisor start to show favor to someone or a few people then it starts to bring animosity which causes lack of cohesion among the team which will bring productivity down. I have been known to be a hard ass to work but Im fair to everyone. With compassion you need to know when you are being played by someone or for when someone really needs compassion whether they are having a bad day, family issues, or something that is really affecting them. If you show the right kind of compassion to the ones the need it then others will start to see you in a different light as a good person.

  12. Within the IT industry I believe that honesty is a very important virtue to practice. When it comes to costumer service, in my experience, the IT and automotive industries are a lot alike. When there is someone who is need of a service from either of these industries it is more than likely because it is something that they do not understand and would not be able to fix themselves. This leaves the customer vulnerable to being taken advantage of, which is want a lot of consumers (including myself) believe. In some situations I’m sure I have even believed I have been taken advantage of when in fact I wasn’t, but because of pervious experiences it is my first thought when someone discusses money for something I do not understand. Without trust and honesty there is no way to ensure your customers are not feeling like they are being taken advantage of by you. Let them know exactly what is that you are doing with that persons property and when explaining to them what it is that they may need make sure they understand what it is that they need and why it is that they need that product or service. Building relationships with customers based on honestly will give you a more rewarding feeling about your job while creating positive impacts on your clientele.
