10. The Right and the Good

Virtually everyone, at one time or another, has to make decisions based on either  The Right Thing to Do or The Good  Thing to Do.  From what we have discussed, there certainly is a difference between the two, and the differences are  reflected  by  our viewpoints based on Ethics, Morals and Values.
Describe an event where ordinary people faced a decision or dilemma whereby there were two choices…one being the Right Thing to do, and the other being the Good Thing to do. State the dilemma, state the two options and explain which was the Right Thing and which was the Good Thing---and why.
You do not have to state your choice, and remember you are to  describe examples of  Right and Good---not  Wrong, Evil or Bad.

Every day of the week someone somewhere is faced with the dilemma of my kids or my job. I would say in every case your kids would be the right thing to choose and your job a good thing. Your kids are your blood and nothing, not even your job, should ever be put before them. You can always find a new job but you can’t replace a child. The good thing to do would be keep the job, yes everyone needs a job and it’s good to have a job, but again jobs can be changed. This is why every job I have ever had, when they asked me is there anything that would come between you and this job I have told them from day one my kids. I have had to make this choice before and it was hard because I was a single mom and needed the income, but I know my son’s health was way more important to me. I also knew I had a loving family and they would agree with my decision and help me through it.

I think that alot of times we have to deside whether to tell the truth or lie about what are friends have done. For instance. If are friend stole something and we either saw them do it or found out about it later. The right thing to do is to tell the truth, the good thing to do is to tell a lie. Loyalty to are friends or tell the truth.

Everyday somewhere someone is faced with the deliema of wht the good thing to fo is and the right thing to do is. This has always been a hard thing for me. Example being seeing a co-workers husband with another woman who is not his wife. Do you tell them or leave it left alone. I think the good thing to do is tell them but the right thing to do is leave it alone. I am not there friend it is none of my business. Im not the person to be telling them.

I think that ebveryone has a choice wheather or not its right or a good thing to do I agree with Amy my kids come first! Infact I have had a job that i had to deal with constant racial remarks and the employer knew my children were mixed. I delt with it for as long as I could to try and earn money to provide for my family but after a while i came to realizr the money was not worth it and I ended up doing the good thing and leaving the agency because not only did I have to look out for the well being of my family but I lso had to take my health into consideration meaning the stress of the remarks.

I think that alot of times it id difficult to choose what to do when you are given the choices of whats good and whats right. I recently hired a new babysitter and I thought that I could trust her. After all I had ment her through a business associate that is a paralegal, which was the sitters mother. A couple days after she had babysat for the first time I noticed that my fiances' percriptions were missing, which was very odd because they were locked up in a cabinet. I thought maybe he misplaced them but I tore throught the house and no0thing showed up. I put two and two together and realized it must have been her. I asked her mother about it and sure enough she found out that it was true. The right thing would have been to call the cops and press charges, but the girl is only eighteen with no criminal history. So we decided that she had to come to the house and apoligize and somehow pay for a future babysitter for a few months instead just to teach her a lesson. Which I believe was the good thing to do, now I am hoping that she has learned her lesson and that she will not do it again, if she was to have a criminal backround it could affect her for a very long time.

A situation where it would be the right thing to do vs. the good thing to do is in a situation where you see someone blatantly cheating a final right in front of you. Do you to the right thing and tell the teacher so the student will have to pay for their actions or do you do the good thing and let the student know you saw them and tell them to stop. Either way the person loses because they obviously do not know the answers to the test and clearly didn't study. I think I would do the good thing and give the student the heads up that I saw them and what they are doing is not ok.

A situation where it would be a choice of the right thing to or the good thing to do is your job or kids. I agree with Amy your kids are the right thing to choose and your job is a good thing to choose. I had a situation where my children where in danger while i was at work, i was the suervisor on duty at the time prior to the getting the call i told one of my staff they could leave when the minimums dropped. After telling her that i received the call i asked her if she could stay just so i can check on my kids i would come back and relieve her she agreed to me but told our boss something different, my boss then said to me that when im at work my kids are to wait and the job is 1st priority. in my opinion i think that the choice i made was the right choice and asking the staff to stay was the good choice although my boss thought differently.

An example of the right versus the good thing to do is if we see a car accident happen right before you but you’re late for work. The right thing to do is stop and give your statement, but is the good thing to do keep going so you’re not late? This may not be a very good example but it’s just an ordinary example of our everyday interactions.

  9. I,too, am a single mom and agree that the well being of our children takes priority over everything else. Unfortunately, my children have little or no relationship with their father (by his choice). However I still think he needs to be informed when good things happen in their lives so he would have an excuse(or reason) to contact them. This is the right thing that I do. The good thing I do is not let my children know that I have have told their father because doesn't acknowledge their accomplishments and this way they do not feel let down by him again.

  10. A ethical Issues I might have to face that I some of my friends in the IT field have faced is find information sent over e-mail or found someone visited web sites that aren’t allowed and that person or persons is a friend that they work with. As a network administrator it will be part of my job to spot these violations and stop them and report it to the higher up’s. This is a moral and ethical issues because you don’t want to get your friend in legal trouble and fired. Also what if that friend has a family and they go to jail or lose their job? Then their family will have to pay the price for that persons wrong doing or their stupid neglect because face it people make mistakes and it could have been a total accident for all I know. So here is the issue, do I confront that person and find out the truth and then do I believe that person and decide to sweep it under the rug or do I just report them and let the chips fall where they may? And if that person was to get fired over that and it turns out to be a complete accident and they didn’t mean to do that then that person would have a hell of a time finding another job with that on their record. Also if they were your friend they should know that you will found out what has been happening and are they taking advantage of your friendship? Is a situation that I can’t really answer till that day I might have to confront a issues like that one. But I do know that if was the right person like my best friend of 16 years who is just like my brother I would not turn him in just because I look after my family no matter what, then it because a matter of my values and I have strong family values but I hope a family member wouldn’t ever put me in that situation.

  11. I would have to agree with a lot of others about my daughter being my highest priority. Right after I went to work after my leave with her I had many issues with daycare for her. At one particular time she was with a girl whom I thought I could trust but was apparently wrong about. When I asked her to watch her I had asked specifically for her to not leave and take her running around all day. When I left for work I asked my neighbor to keep an eye out for them and give me a call if she notices anything because I wasn’t to sure if I trusted this person but I was really left with no choice at the time. Two hours into my work day I got a call saying that this person had left with my child and she wasn’t sure where they were going. After hanging up with her I called the house, no answer, tried her cell, no answer, her house and even her boyfriends house which no one answered. At this time my daughter was only 4 months and if anything were to happen there would be no way for her to let me know so I freaked out. I did my best to send people out to find her while concentrating on my work but after an hour I couldn’t think of work any longer. When I finally said I was leaving to go find her myself I was told that they were sorry about my personal issue however business is business and if I left I was going to be written up. I told my boss to do what he felt he had to do because I was on my way to do what I had to do as a mother.
